Our Safe Place

This poem is intended to be placed somewhere in the home, identifying that place as somewhere to speak freely and openly about the things we find it hard to discuss.  My hope is that it will encourage the development of a feeling of safety, openness and honesty within families, so that feelings aren’t left buried and festering.

Welcome to our safe place:
A place that’s truly blessed.
It’s where our pain and worries
Can all be laid to rest.

A place where we are honest
Without the guilt and shame
For this is where we’re open to
Each other without blame.

It’s good to share our secrets,
Our worries and our fears
So we can be a comfort to
Each other through the tears.

Here, nothing is too sacred,
And nothing will appal;
For we are in our refuge
And love will conquer all.

As an adult, this concept of a ‘safe place’ reminds me of many of the Psalms which speak of God providing a place of refuge: one where we can be open, and confess all and God’s grace provides all that we need to begin the healing.

You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.

Psalm 32 verse 7

I wrote this poem in response to a request from Chaska Daye (and daughter) who asked for a poem to dedicate to their safe place where they can share everything without fear of lies and the threat of punishment. The place is to be a place of honesty and openness where a child can feel safe and loved. It’s a beautiful idea and I would encourage others to use it too.

Please feel free to copy it, print it out, and get your child to illustrate it before putting it up in your ‘Safe Place’. At some point, I hope to sell illustrated canvases and/or posters via the website, but I still have lots of work to do, so please enjoy the DIY option meanwhile!
