SIMILE POEMS AND METAPHOR POETRY

If you are unsure of what a simile or a metaphor is, click on the TEACHERS’ PAGE, FIGURATIVE WRITING (INTRO), SIMILES AND METAPHORS for a detailed explanation, and some ideas of how to get started writing simile and metaphor poetry. Listed below are examples of my poems which contain similes and metaphors to a greater or lesser degree. Some are written specifically as simile poems or metaphor poetry whilst others contain similes and metaphors along with other figurative language. I have therefore listed each of my poems which include either/ or both similes and metaphors in this category, as well a brief description with each poem of the amount included together with details of any other figurative language used. Hopefully this will help you to ascertain how useful each poem will be in your teaching/ learning.

19 April 2012

Having done a World War Two workshop with year five children at Queen Primary, they produced some fantastic poems of different forms, including acrostic & shape poems, using lots of figurative language, such as alliteration and metaphors.  Click here to go to the page of World War Two poems that the children wrote.

Meet the Lemurs at Yorkshire Wildlife Park

18 April 2012

The following poem is my adaptation of one written by Lucy, an 8 year old poet whose poem won one of my poetry competitions.  Her poem was so effective and full of figurative language  (including alliteration, metaphors and personification) that it made me want to see these fabulous animals.

Evacuee

6 March 2012

This rhyming, rhythmical shape poem is written in a list format but in the shape of a suitcase and includes a metaphor and a couple of moments of alliteration.  Thinking of the moment during World War Two when a child was evacuated to the country, I tried to put all of the thoughts […]

Bonfire Night

28 February 2012

This rhyming, rhythmical alphabet poem is packed full of alliteration, and combines all of the sights, sounds and emotions (good and bad) of bonfire night.  An ABC poem is a good way to think of all of the elements of bonfire night, as there is endless inspiration in the occasion itself, and this poem […]

Beware the Knicker Nickers

27 February 2012

This alien story poem is nothing more than a bit of silly fun, inspired by the word play in the title.  It includes some metaphors, alliteration and word play.  It did, however, become something of a challenge keeping up the rhyme pattern of aaaa. (See BEGINNERS’ PAGES for explanation of rhyme patterns.)

Awe and Wonder

27 February 2012

This nature poem combines my love and appreciation of spring with my Christian faith, so I was torn as to whether to include this poem in the nature category.  However, I felt that it captured the gentility and the feelings that Springtime evokes, as well as having an unusual rhyme pattern, so I hope […]

A River’s Journey

I have had requests for journey poems and for a river acrostic poem, and have taken this River’s Journey poem one step further to include aspects of a shape poem.  It is great for teaching figurative language as it includes lots of personification, metaphors and alliteration, and some onomatopoeia.

13 February 2012

This shows all of the examples of personification that this poem uses in bold italics so is great for teaching personification.  It is intended to be read after the poem itself (see Waiting or the Evening Bus), so that you can see how many examples of personification you had spotted without the help!

Waiting for the Evening Bus

12 February 2012

This poem is packed full of examples of personification, using the scenario of standing at the bus stop in an evening, under the lamplight, and picturing each lamp-post as a sentry, standing tall with a vacant, faceless stare.  It also includes lots of similes, metaphors, alliteration and a moment of word play to […]
