FUNNY /SILLY POEMS
This category includes all of my funny poems but be warned! Some are gentle humour, and others involve toilet humour and bogies, but I only wrote them because the children made me do it: I’m a good girl really!
I have also mixed in my silly, imaginative poems, which are often funny too purely because of their silly content. Often I write these when I’m in a thinking, wondering mood. Usually I start off being sensible and then I end up back in childish mode after I’ve written a couple of verses! I love to write alien poems, as they are not restricted by facts but can go where the rhyming leads me, no matter how silly that might be, so I’m often surprised by the ending myself. On the other hand, sometimes I start with a joke, or a punchline, and write the poem with that intention in mind. Generally, my silly poems come under the category of “Creative Writing”, ie, writing using your imagination. Every child has an advantage when it comes to doing creative writing as children already have such a great imagination, so you just need to learn the writing techniques. Have a look at the TEACHERS’ PAGE, CREATIVE WRITING, for some ideas to get you started with creative writing.
Aliens: Look Who’s Green!
The refrain of this rhyming, alien story poem is a great example of assonance. the poem, as a whole is a story poem but the refrain is written in the style of a list poem.
Last night I saw a UFO descending from the sky.
It landed in my garden, but I’d no idea why.
The spaceship doors were opened wide, and to my great surprise
A stream of aliens came out before my very eyes. [click to continue…]
Silly Poems
What can I say about this silly conversational poem. I’m sure that everyone can relate to the mystery of the missing teaspoons!
I need some extra teaspoons:
There’re none left in the drawer.
The last lot disappeared, so now
I’ve bought another four. [click to continue…]
Silly Poems
This is simply a silly food poem which uses the expectation of the potential rhyming word to cause the amusement, leaving the author guilt free and the reader to blame for their own mischievous mindset!
I know that baked beans are good for your heart
But I do not eat them as they make me far t……….oo excitable. [click to continue…]
Creative Writing
This children’s poem lists lots of different worlds which each infer something about themselves simply by their title and spark off a child’s imagination. I used the poem with an assembly of 5 to 7 year olds and asked them to choose a place and use the title to imagine more about it and describe it in detail, making a fabulous descriptive exercise.
I went into a primary school just the other day.
I found that all the children had such a lot to say.
They talked of all the places that I didn’t know existed:
Details they would not have shared, if I had not persisted. [click to continue…]
Creative Writing
This rhyming children’s poem is the result of simply telling a group of 5 to 7 year olds the title and asking them to describe ‘Wish World’ to me. It demonstrates how easily inspired young children are to unleash their imaginations! The poem includes examples of alliteration, and is full of imagery.
I haven’t been to Wish World but I know some kids who’ve been
And told me of a quite delicious sweet and chocolate scene.
Apparently, when they arrived they licked the chocolate lake
That flowed around an island (made of scrumptious jam sponge cake!) [click to continue…]
