Jesus: Our Saviour AND Lord
This poem looks at how a crowd of people who praised Jesus as He rode into Jerusalem could have turned on Him and shouted for His crucifixion just a week later.
“Hosanna” they cried “in the Highest:
Our rescuer, sent from on high!”
Those same people, just one week later
Were shouting out “CRUCIFY!”
For they had been lured by the party.
Emotions were all running high.
They saw Jesus as their Messiah….
But not as the one who would die!
“Surely he came to be conqueror?
Surely He’ll do things our way?”
But no, Jesus calls us to follow.
He calls us to trust and obey.
So while they were stirred by his presence,
They weren’t shaken nearly enough.
They didn’t expect that His coming
Was when things would start to get tough!
They probably would have been puzzled,
Expecting the ruler of all
To come in, with all guns a-blazing,
And cause Rome to finally fall.
Humility wasn’t expected.
And kindness? That could never win!
A victor was all that they wanted:
A powerful warrior king!
So when Jesus failed to deliver
The freedom the crowd had assumed
(As rescuer-king, from the Romans)
His life, as a man, became doomed.
For yes, we can all love a Saviour:
The one who can rescue us all;
But when (as our Lord) Jesus beckons,
Can we truly answer His call?
Accepting a Saviour is one thing
But if He’s to be our Lord too
We’re called to obey and to follow
(Which isn’t as easy to do!)
So “Jesus, my LORD and my Saviour”:
The statement cannot be one way!
For, just like the Palm Sunday people,
Our faith will be tested some day!
What’s your 30 pieces of silver?
What challenges cause you to stray?
Would you have been fearful or tempted?
Could you simply trust and obey?
So maybe, for you, it is easy
To see God as Saviour and King….
But Jesus, the friend, and the leader?
As Lord, over everything?
Is that, for you, hard to relate to?
To see God as Lord of your life?
To trust Him with all your possessions,
Your future, your dangers, your strife?
Is He truly Lord of your hobbies,
Relationships, time and behaviour?
Or maybe you find it much simpler
To look on Him ONLY as Saviour!
If so then, I challenge your spirit.
Respond to Him; give Him control!
Make Jesus the Lord of your life,
Your body, your mind and your soul.
