Mary and her Little Lamb

by angela on June 20, 2012

This alternative story of Mary and her little lamb includes the original simile and a new metaphor.  Other than that, is just a silly poem using the same rhyme and rhythm pattern, but telling an entirely different story with not quite the same pleasantries as the original nursery rhyme!

Mary had a little lamb
Its fleece was white as snow
And everywhere that Mary went
The lamb was sure to go.

She found it quite annoying when
It followed her to school;
And toilet visits, well,
WE know that privacy’s the rule.

But, no! This little cuddly,
Fluffy ball of pure white cloud
Just didn’t understand that that’s
A place it’s not allowed!

It followed her to restaurants:
She always got kicked out.
It seemed to think that all the rules
Were there for it to flout!

And cinemas, well, poor old Mary
Had to stay at home
Because the lamb refused
To let Mary go alone.

It followed her to football matches,
Messing with the game;
Despite poor Mary’s efforts,
She always got the blame!

She just couldn’t control it,
She tethered it with rope
But it escaped so often and
Poor Mary couldn’t cope.

Today it followed her to town,
and to the butchers shop.

BIG MISTAKE:

She’s taking it back home now…

as lamb chop!

Sorry, but you must have seen it coming!

Anyway, if you prefer to read the original, click here for the lyrics of the traditional nursery rhyme.  On the other hand, if you’d like to see more of my examples of alternative nursery rhymes, click here,  or for tips on getting started writing your own, click here.

This is a particular favourite nursery rhyme of mine for inspiring silly poems, and I have two more of them in my book “The Good, the Mad and The Ugly: A Collection of Angela’s Poems” RRP £5.99
