I Am

rotherham_ambassador_portraitI very rarely write in free verse, but this poem felt too deep and expressive to be steered by anything but the emotions and memories as they flowed.   As a  rhyming poet I do not naturally appreciate free verse but, strangely, I found it easy to structure the verses of this particular poem according to which words felt the most important to me and what details I wanted to be stressed, so I found it a good way to learn and understand about free verse.  The poem can be used in conjunction with the poem “Introducing ……You!” as part of a workshop on the topic, for each individual to consider and write about their own influences in life.

I am my selfless Mum,who sacrificed a promising career as a concert pianist to be a fulltime mother.

I am my all-knowing Dad, who worked shifts and long hours, and still found the time to help me with my homework.

I am my hardworking Grandma, who brought up four daughters, and ran a corner shop whilst her husband was away at war.

I am my mischievous Granddad, who rewarded cheeky, naughty children’s songs with pocket money and giggles.

I am my close circle of family and friends who gave me an idyllic childhood.

I am the pensioner at church who nicknamed me “Smiler”.

I am my church youth leader, who showed me a God that I can rely on.

I am my Church youth fellowship, which introduced me to a faithful circle of friends, including my husband.

I am my younger ‘darling little sister’; the baby of the family.

I am my older sister who always took the blame to protect my angelic reputation!

I am my eldest sister who endured unexciting and ‘twee’ activities on my behalf during her teenage years.

I am the cancer, which took mum’s life but left me with wonderful memories.

I am my unshakeable, ever reliable husband, who completes me.

I am my innocent and caring children who bring fun and laughter into every day.

I am the anonymous controlling influence, who taught me that the world cannot be faced with an entirely gullible and naïve nature.

I am my loving in-laws who redressed the balance, restoring family values.

I am the primary teacher who shared her enthusiasm and love of poetry.

I am my Aunty, who encouraged me to write seriously.

I AM ME,

the poet,

who is grateful to the roller coaster of life for all of the experiences and creative inspiration they have provided.
