Nature Poems

I love the calming effect that nature has on me.  This poem is the result of one of those moments when I forced myself to take time out.  It is written as a list poem and uses character reflection and imagery to carry the reader through the gradual process of the changing emotions.

Away from the hustle and bustle of life;
Away from the stress, and the worry and strife;
Away from the pressures of Mum and of wife;
Creation’s a wonderful thing.

Enjoying the beauty of flowers and trees;
Enjoying the insects, the bugs and the bees;
Enjoying the power of oceans and seas;
Creation’s a wonderful thing.

Relaxed by the songs of the hen and the drake;
Relaxed by the calm of the rippling lake
Relaxed by the sounds that the children make;
Creation’s a wonderful thing.

Discovering the peace and the calm all around;
Discovering the pleasures of sight and of sound;
Discovering my stress draining deep underground;
Creation’s a wonderful thing.

Refreshed to return to the challenge of life;
Refreshed to attend to the stresses and strife;
Refreshed to enjoy being Mum and a wife;
Life is a wonderful thing.

The repetitive nature of each stanza is deliberate in order to enhance the fact that the calming effect is gradual and nurturing, developing over time as a process of soaking up the environment and allowing the stress to drain away.  The choice of each first repeated word is also important in the process:

  1. The negative mindset only allows the writer to be ‘away‘ from something negative, not yet appreciating the positive.
  2. The enjoyment of things around begins.
  3. The effect of the enjoyment is relaxation; a temporary mindset.
  4. The inner discovery of the positives around start to have a lasting inner effect
  5. Returning refreshed to the same circumstances, but with a new outlook, gives a whole new feeling of positivity and ability to do more than just cope.

The term ‘character reflection’ simply means that the poem goes full circle, back to the same starting point, but reflects a new outlook:  an opposite mirror image.  It is the attitude that has changed, not the situation, so the whole thing looks different through the reflection of the character.

That’s how nature works for me!
