This poem is purpose written to encourage a child to aim for their full potential, rather than meeting every challenge with the words “I Can’t”.
Inspired by my own experience of not discovering my poetic ability until I was 38 years old, and even then not having the confidence to call myself a poet until others started to refer to me as one……
the poem begins:
Can I ask a little question?
Do you promise you won’t lie?
When you said you couldn’t do it
Did you ever really try?
Did you make a token gesture:
Just a sudden little flurry,
Then give up at the first hurdle
In a tantrum filled with worry?……etc

“I Can’t” is always well received by children everywhere that I perform it, and would make a particularly good gift as an end of year encouragement from their teacher.
