MOTHER’S DAY PERFORMANCE POEMS AND SONGS
If you are looking for new Mothers Day poems and songs for the children to perform at your Mothers Day assembly my poems will be perfect as they were purpose written for this reason for different age groups across primary school.
They are all written as performance poetry requiring minimal rehearsal for maximum effect, as there never seem to be enough Mothers Day performance poems to go around! I have listed them below in what I consider to be appropriate age order (which has put my personal favourite at the end of the list!), but the poems themselves are actually posted individually, and I will add more as I write them.
You will know your own children and their abilities so feel free to adapt the poems to suit your specific needs, but here are my own suggestions of what I had in mind as I wrote them, thinking specifically of children aged 5 to 10 years:
1. Mothers’ Day Song called “You’re My Mum” for younger children, (adaptable to refer to ‘Someone Special’ if necessary rather than specifically ‘Mum’)….
- This Mothers Day song is deliberately written to be simple but effective, and uses a very simple rhyming pattern to make each line easy to anticipate and remember. I have included a downloadable midi file of the backing track as well as the words and sheet music for the song.

2. A sensitive Mothers Day poem for older children, (not exclusive to mums!) Can be used as a song using the tune of “Puff the Magic Dragon”….
- Since losing my own Mum I have been very aware of how difficult Mothers Day can be for those in similar circumstances, particularly children. This next poem celebrates the “someone special” in our lives, without mention of Mum, making it appropriate across a whole range of personal situations and home lives.
It is again written in rhyme, and I would suggest performing it as a class but in small groups, each saying 4 lines or alternatively, it can be sung to the tune of “Puff the Magic dragon”
I have included the downloadable document for your ease of use.

3. Finally, my personal favourite….
A Mothers’ Day performance poem, including printable picture sheet, specifically for older primary children.
- This performance poem begins with a child wearing an apron, and the scene and props are set up ready to do some baking. The 11 verses of this rhyming poem then include 22 different ingredients that are added to make the perfect mix for “My Home-baked Mum”, including some amusing word play humour. I have also included a downloadable picture sheet for these 22 ingredients so that they could be added to the mix as individuals walk on reciting each line, if you choose to perform the poem visually in this way as a group.

I will add more Mothers’ Day poems and songs as I write them, but I still have lots of work to do on the website in the meantime, so please be patient!
