This story poem uses word play to make the case  that it’s good for education to be fun and that laughter helps us to make progress, whilst remembering that we must get the balance right too.  Read it, first of all as a story about Laughter and Progress as two living beings.  Then read it again thinking of how laughter and progress go together as a concept for teaching.

Laughter and Progress were both on a walk
(As often they go hand in hand)
Then suddenly Laughter left Progress behind;
Something which Progress can’t stand!

But when Laughter noticed that Progress had stopped
And they were no longer connected
He quietly waited to let him catch up
So Progress did not feel neglected.

Soon enough Laughter distracted Progress:
They ended up losing their way,
Then Progress remembered his teacher’s words
“Don’t let your friends lead you astray”

So Progress decided he’d have to take charge
If they were to find their way back
He gently, but firmly, made Laughter behave
And soon they were back on their track.

So now these two friends have both learnt, and agreed,
That whenever they go for a stroll
They do need each other, but it’s best for both
If Progress is left in control!
