Mary Had a Little Lamb

by angela on June 20, 2012

Mary had a little lamb
Its fleece was white as snow
And everywhere that Mary went
The lamb was sure to go.

It followed her to school one day,
Which was against the rule
It made the children laugh and play,
To see a lamb at school.

And so the teacher turned it out,
But it still lingered near,
And waited patiently about
Till Mary did appear.

“Why does the lamb love Mary so?”
The eager children cry;
“Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know”
The teacher did reply.

I find this particular nursery rhyme very inspiring for writing my own alternative version, and have a couple of examples amongst my alternative nursery rhymes (click here to find them), as well as a couple in my book “The Good, The Mad and The Ugly: A Collection of Angela’s Poems” RRP £5.99.  If you would like to see the lyrics to all of the traditional nursery rhymes that I have posted click here, or if you fancy having a go at writing alternative nursery rhymes, click here for tips on getting started.
