Seaside Senses

seaside.jpg This seaside senses poem includes examples of metaphors, personification, alliteration , assonance, consonance and word play all within an 8 line poem, using the simple format of a list poem.

SEE
the waves jumping and tumbling around
With childish excitement, they playfully bound.

HEAR them explode with an almighty roar
As they bounce on the bed, and then fall to the floor.

FEEL the warm sand as it creeps through your toes;
The heat of the sun as your rosy tan glows.

TASTE the salt water and holiday air;
The sweet SMELL of freedom and life without care.

I love to explore the senses this way, by describing places and things around me in relation to what I see, hear, touch, taste and smell. It’s a great way to help yourself recognise and record the details that you might not otherwise have mentioned, or even noticed.

If you need help finding all of the examples of figurative language that I have mentioned, first of all look at the TEACHERS’ PAGE, FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE INTRO above to find explanations of all of the different types of figurative language.  (The words metaphor, personification, alliteration, assonance and consonance all sound impressive, but are very simple when explained!)  Then have a look at the HIGHLIGHTED VERSION OF MY SEASIDE SENSES poem to see the examples of each within the poem.
