The Ultimate Christmas Gift

Present

This Christmas performance poem is purpose written to be used to compliment my “Grandpa’s Nativity Story” nativity play, but can be used as a standalone poem too.  It uses a repeated refrain throughout the poem, plus an optional extension which could be used as part of a church sermon.

Presents are lovely at Christmas
A great way to share out our love
But let’s not forget that the best gift
Is the one that came down from above.

God bless us at Christmas, each one of us here
But don’t forget Jesus at this time of year.
The blessing of Jesus at Christmas
Is the one that we seldom remember,
Lost in the fun and the parties;
The festivities of December.

God bless us at Christmas, each one of us here
But don’t forget Jesus at this time of year.
The pleasures we all have at Christmas
Are wonderful things we can share,
Ways to express how we’re feeling;
Chances to show how we care.

God bless us at Christmas, each one of us here
But don’t forget Jesus at this time of year.
We have some fantastic traditions
And families and friends gather round
Collecting up memorable moments
And treasuring gifts that abound.

God bless us at Christmas, each one of us here
But don’t forget Jesus at this time of year.
He came down to earth from in heaven
To live out his life as a man
But the Christmas nativity story
Was only the way it began.
(# can extend to a ‘sermon’ by adding the optional insert in here.)

So bless God at Christmas, each one of us here
Say thank you to Jesus at this time of year.

# Optional insert to add as part of a church sermon maybe..
So let’s not forget Him at Christmas
For Jesus was more than a child
He knew that He would have to die
As someone despised and reviled
Someone who suffered for our sakes
Someone with unending love
Someone who is God entirely
The Trinity, come from above.
