Fairtrade Campaign
My small step for Fairtrade was to buy only bananas with the Fairtrade logo; then Tesco discontinued their sale! I have therefore started an ongoing campaign to get Tesco to sell Fairtrade bananas exclusively. Tesco have since introduced Fairtrade Organic bananas at £1.55, then reduced them back to £1.40 (the pre-campaign price), so we have had an effect already. People often get the impression that Fairtrade bananas are expensive, but Fairtrade are an independent charity, not a business and the premium that they add onto the cost of the bananas is LESS THAN A PENNY PER BANANA! This Fairtrade premium is then reinvested back into the industry to help the plantation owners achieve fair (and safe) working conditions and wages for their workers.
If they only add less than a penny per banana, why do the supermarkets sell them so much more expensive than other bananas? Sainsburys sell ONLY FAIRTRADE BANANAS and manage to sell them at £1 per bunch compared to Tesco at £1.40.
Help us to persuade Tesco to follow this example so that we can know that we are making a difference whilst even paying less as the customer!
Send a copy of my current campaign poem (Poem 3 Tesco: YOUR Comments Have Been Noted) to philip.clarke@uk.tesco.com , as he is the Chief Executive of Tesco and needs to make the decision to sell Fairtrade bananas exclusively.
This poem is the second campaign poem that I wrote to Tesco in protest of their lack of support for Fairtrade bananas. Click here to understand what brought the campaign into being, and to see the first campaign poem that I (and everyone who agrees with the sentiment) sent to Tesco.
(More importantly, help us to persuade Tesco to sell ONLY FAIRTRADE BANANAS by sending the current campaign poem. Click here to download it.) [click to continue…]
This is the third and current poem in our campaign….please send it to philip.clarke@uk.tesco.com to persuade Tesco to sell ONLY FAIRTRADE BANANAS, so that we can be assured that the plantation owners are receiving a fair price.
